Meal Emissions Calculator

Work out the climate footprint and nutrition of a meal, ingredient by ingredient. Save your meals and compare them. Where a scheme such as One Planet Plate applies, switch on its view to see how each meal does against its goals.

Standard View And One Planet Plate View

The standard view is a plain emissions calculator with no targets. The One Planet Plate view adds that scheme's goals: a climate budget per meal, sourcing checks and plant-based ingredients only. The same saved meals can be looked at either way.

One Planet Plate is run by WWF Sweden, so it only applies to our campaigns in Sweden. Read what it requires.

How It Works
  1. Add Your Ingredients

Search 899 foods and enter the raw weight of each one for the whole recipe. If something isn't listed, type its name and its CO₂e figure from your supplier.

  2. Set The Portions

Say how many portions the recipe makes. The calculator works out the climate footprint of one portion.

  3. Check The Nutrition

See energy, protein, fibre, fat, sugars, salt and key vitamins and minerals per portion or for the whole recipe, from the national CIQUAL food composition table.

  4. Save And Compare

Save meals and open them again later. Switch on the One Planet Plate view to see how the same meals do against its climate budget and sourcing rules.

Climate Figures

SU-EATABLE LIFE figures are the median of the published footprints the dataset's authors collected for that food. When a food has only a few studies, the authors recommend using the median for its wider food group instead, and the calculator follows that advice. It shows every study behind a figure.

AGRIBALYSE figures add up the life-cycle stages from farm to shop. The final stage (the shopper's trip home, storage and cooking at home) is left out because a restaurant buys the product and cooks it itself. AGRIBALYSE models food consumed in France.

The other environmental figures (water footprint, water scarcity, land use, acidification and marine eutrophication) come from the same two datasets. Foods from SU-EATABLE LIFE borrow the AGRIBALYSE figure of the matching product, so treat those as estimates.

If your supplier or calculation tool gives a figure, enter it as your own figure and the calculator uses it instead.

Nutrition

CIQUAL is the French national food composition table, published by ANSES. Each ingredient's “Sources” shows which CIQUAL food it uses.
